How is a Squame product created? Phase 2: Design

PHASE 2: Design
In the first part of the story (Phase 1: Ideation) we told you how the idea of ​​developing a travel shirt was born, if you haven't read it yet you can do so here .

Once the product idea was in focus, we moved on to the second phase: design.

Once we had identified the key features the product needed, we began a meticulous search for materials. The jersey fabric had to meet the key criteria: be lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying.

Once the base fabric was found, the actual design of the garment began.

I like to define our products as artisanal; craftsmanship is probably one of Squame's most distinctive features. Artisanal production is defined by the prevalence of human input over machinery, without the use of mass production.

In our case, everything starts with a messy pencil sketch, the first step in translating the idea from our mind to reality. We identify the pattern's construction by highlighting its key parts, distinguishing the various materials that will compose the garment.

When we designed the travel jersey, the goal was to make the product as light as possible, we added run-resistant mesh inserts to allow excellent breathability, and the mesh back pocket also allows the garment to dry more quickly.

Once the first sketch was completed, we presented the idea to the pattern maker, analyzing the more technical aspects that were beyond our expertise. Even the seams had to allow for comfort and breathability. By eliminating heavier elastics and silicone inserts, and gluing and taping the fabrics together, we achieved a comfortable fit without pressure points.

After discussing every detail and trying not to underestimate anything, the project took shape.

We were eagerly awaiting the first results, and a few days later we finally held the first prototype of the shirt in our hands.

We could touch and see our idea become tangible, all that was left to do was get on the bike and go test it!

Now begins the final phase, which completes the product's development: field testing, which we will discuss in the next story.
